WELLINGTON SPECIAL.

WORKMEN’S COMPENSATION, (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, last night. When the Arbitration Court next sits in this district, it will he called upon to adjudicate on the first claims made under the Workmen’s Compensation for Accidents Act of last session. There are two of them, both arising out of bushfelling accidents at Dannevirke. In one case the claim is for £l2O, the major portion of which is for compensation, and the rest for expenses ; in the other instance, the claimant will be satisfied with somewhere about £lO 10s. THE HEALTH OFFICE.

The Chief Health Officer of the 1 colony is next week to attend in the interest of the Government the Inter-* ■ colonial Medical Conference at Hobart. Dr. Mason will take part in the deliberation of the Conference, and he has been asked to read a paper upon his pet subject, the treatment of can-' cer. While in Australia he will make a round of the various States and examine the system under which they conduct matters relating to public health. In his absence Dr. Valentine, District Health Officer, of Wellington, will act as Deputy-Chief. CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE CON- . FERENCE. The topics set down for consideration at the Chambers of Commerce Conference, to be held here next week, include the following matters of commercial interest Past, Present, and Future of New Zealand Railways, Metric system of Weights and Measures, Bank Holidays, All-Red routes for mails, trade extension, bills of lading, federation of Chambers, weekend railway tickets, reduction in London warehouse charges on wool, uniform system of values on exports from New Zealand, pilferage of cargo from London, preferential trade or a Customs Union, recent labor legislation and its effect on the trade of the colony, State fire insurance, the coal industry, and the African meat contracts. The proceedings are expected to last about three days. It is expected that delegates will attend from the Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Napier, Palmerston North. Masterton, Nelson, Wanganui, Feilding, Marton, and Westport Chambers.
