Mrs E. Black, ladies’ nurse, has an advertisement in this issue. St. Joseph’s Convent School reopens to-day. Mr D. Douglas has a five-roomed cottage to let on Whataupoko, The annual meeting of St. Andrew’s congregation is to be held on Wednesday evening, February sth. The Patutahi Public School hold thenannual treat on Thursday week, February 6th. A meeting of the Citizens’ Committee of the water and drainage scheme will be held this evening in Mr Townley’s hall. Provisional specifications havo been accepted by the Patent Office of an improved earth snoop, the patentee being James Barclay Jackson, of Motu. A surveying party from PI.M.S. Penguin has discovered an uncharted rock in the bay. It is believed to be the identical rock struck by the Tarawera five or six years ago.
A summoned meeting of Court William Gladstone, A.0.F., is called for Thursday evening, when the members celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Court.
The Gazette notifies that Edgar Swinaorton has been appointed postmaster and telephonist at Whatatutu, Jas. McCutcheon as postmaster at Wharekopae, and Clement Henry Burdett as telephonist at Tatapouri. We expect to publish in to-morrow’s issue the full programme of Mrs Barrington Waters’ recital on Thursday evening. As the accommodation at the hall is somewhat limited, we would advise intending patrons to secure their seats early.
The usual initiation meeting of the Star of Gisborne Lodge of Oddfellows will be held this evening instead of Thursday, and the installation •of officers will take place to-morrow night. After the installation ceremony there will be a social gathering of the brethren to welcome Bro. Aitkin, the Graudmaster of the Order in the colony.
Amongst the list of medical practitioners practising in the colony, and published in the Gazette, appear the names of George William Cole, John Craig, Wei by Earle Fisher, Leonard Sonstadt Hughes, John Adolphus Laing, and John William Williams, of Gisborne; and Cyril Stephen Davis and Norman McKay Grant, of Waipiro. Doctor Laing has ceased practising in Gisborne, and Doctor Hughes is on an extended visit to England. In the register of dentists in the colony, published in the Gazette, appears the names of Stewart Allan Noble Campbell, Albert Ernest Sykes, and Walter James Sykes, of Gisborne. Mr W. J. Sykes is the only one of the three at present practising in Gisborne. Of the other local dentists Mr .Josiah Goodwin Cox is shown as practising in Invercargill, and Mr Charles William Seymour as practising in Christchurch.
The “ Railway Cricket Team ” write to us challenging Mr Julius Ctesar’s team to a game of cricket for a set of cricketing material. The letter states that ho refused them the use of his ground and cricketing gear, giving as his reason that he did not want his ground torn up with hob-nailed boots. The railway cricketers deny that they play in hob-nail boots, adding that they can wear cricketing shoes, the same as any other team. They also state that ladies can come and witness them play without any fear of being shocked with bad language, as Mr Ca;sar is alleged to have asserted would be the case.

The Danish Minister at Washington has been instructed tu sign me sale oi the Danish West Indies to Anuri a. Mr Aitken, Grand Master of the New Zealand Order of Oddfellows, A.C., arrived in Gisborne yesterday on a short visit. The telephone exchange staff is to be strengthened by trie appointment of Master Whinray, telegraph messenger, as assistant exchange clerk. A meeting of the Management Committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association will be held in the Masonic Hotel at 7.60 this evening.
There are at present a large number of inmates in the men’s ward of the Gisborne Hospital, all the beds, with the exception of three, being occupied. Most ot the cases are the result of accidents.
A telegram from Hastings notifies the death of Mr William Beilby, who was a prominent Freemason, and in his official capacity has made visits to Gisborne.
The privileges in connection with the Gisborne Racing Club’s meeting are to be submitted to auction next Saturday. At a committee meeting of the Club, it was decided to accept- the tender of Mrs Erskine for the season’s catering.
A telegram from Dunedin .states that the following Gisborne candidates nave matriculated in the University examinations : —E. McGregor, A. Tuohy, Jessie C. Brown, Eva Nisbet, Lena J. C. Burns, H. P. Hamilton, 1-lenare Poanaanga, R. Waugh. A startling bolt occurred yesterday. A pair of horses attached to a buggy took fright, and in their career collided with the pests of the verandah of Mr Morgan’s shop, knocking one post off and the other nearly so. The occupant of the buggy, Mr Skillicorn, was thrown out before the collision took place, but was not injured.
At Nelson, Mr Charles Bird, wno recently retired from the position ot captain of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade after 35 years’ service in the Brigade, and Mr Win. Cooksey, late secretary of the same brigade, which he had been a member of for 35 years, were each presented with a purse of sovereigns.
The Licensing Committee on Saturday granted a temporary transfer from W. L. Racket,! to W. A. Hodge, of the license of the Murewai Hotel. Conditional licenses were granted to Peter Craer for a booth at the Wairoa races on February 4th and sth, and to J. H. Aislabie for Matawhero saleyards on February 6th.
