A Sensational Dividend.

[ Special to Times. | Auckland, last night.

The opening day of the l'akapuna races resulted in big dividends in almost every race. The one sensational dividend of £322 4s in the hack race is considered to be the biggest known in New Zealand, only one ticket being on the winner. A syndicate of four backed every horse in the race. Seventeen started, and each held a quarter ticket. The owner did not back it. Leo Delaval is a well-bred horse. The last race of the day resulted in a shocking and disgraceful start. Takapuna was one of the favorites in the race, ridden by the Australian jockey, Gainsford. The start took place in front of the stand. At one time the horses were beautifully lined up. There were shouts'from the crowd, “ Let them go I ” but the veteran starter refused, resulting in his being hooted. Eventually Mr Cutts said, “ I won’t let you go,” and up the barrier went. Takapuna was not ready, and remained stationary, viewing the race from the starting point. The crowd indulged in prolonged hooting towards the starter.
