By 237 votes to 134 the House of Commons rejected Mr lledmond’s amendment to the Address-iu-Reply. Tho minority included 63 Nationalists and 71 Radicals. Tho abstention of Lord Rosebery from voting was a protest against the Nationalist methods, especially in regard to traitorous speeches. Mr Atkinson, Attorney-Goneral of Ireland, said that no serious crime the Ireland League had not proclaimed could oasily be revived under another name. Non-payment of rent and boycotting were cases which should properly be dealt with by magistrates instead of juries. Mr Morley, in a vigorous critical speech, supported the amendment, and advocated colonial self-government for Ireland. Lord Cranbourno stated that the occupation of a seaport on tho Persian Gulf by any Power was inconsistent with the maintenance of the status quo. In reply to a question regarding Manchuria, he said Britain’s policy was to maintain the status quo China had established by treaty.
