A Visitor’s Views.

Mr Wise, Attorney-General, in an interview, said he did not see how any visitor to New Zealand could hut he impressed with its very great prosperity. the extraordinary fertility of the country, and the enormous advantages which certainly appear to have been made the most of. Wherever one goes lie sees evidence of very close attention being given by the Government to the requirements of the country. In this respect the smallness of the islands are their advantage, since, every local matter can he brought under the personal notice of the Prime Minister. He was favorably impressed with the working of the Industrial Arbitration Act, and got the necessary information to enable. him to draw up regulations for New South Wales. He particularly inquired as to the method of dealing with the unemployed, with special reference to the co-operative system of public works. He was profoundly impressed with the merits of this. and proposed to bring it under Mr O’Sullivan’s notice at an early date. The system may h? a little more costly than the contract, system, but- not more expensive than' contract or day labor schemes, plus Government relief. By adopting it New Zealand had been enabled to dispense entirely with relief works, while the moral effect upon the men of the two systems, the relief and co-opera- ' live, cannot be compared,
