FATAL ACCIDENT.

Christchurch, last night. Last night a young man named Claude Smith, son of Mr H. Smith, of tho Belfast Hotel, was thrown out of a trap through the horse becoming frightened at a motor car, and the young man received such injuries that he died in the hospital during tho night. An inquest was held to-night. Evidence was given to the effect that the accident was caused by deceased, who was driving, turning tho corner of a side street too sharply when endeavoring to get out of the way of tho motor car. A verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attributable to anyone. A GALE.

A howling noruh-west wind was blowing from an early hour this morning, causing considerable damage to gardens and troes along the Avon. Standing crops were severely injured and many fields of oats threshed out.
