BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. There were present : The Mayor (Mr Townloy), and Crs. Harding, Miller, Kennedy, Hepburn, Jones, Mason, Lyanar, and Wbinray. Messrs E. W. Mills and Co. advised that the road scraper ordered by the Council had been forwarded. —The Mayor said that the machine was to hand, and was of the latest pattern. Mr C. A. Vautior, architect, wrote offering his services in connection with the erection of abattoirs in Gisborne. He was at the present time engaged by the Hastings Borough Council in the erection of their abattoirs. —Reply to be sent that the Council was not at present prepared to proceed with the erection of abattoirs. The Secretary of Crown Lands, wrote in reference to the proposal of the Council to take certain lands under the Public Works Act for the purposes of a cemetery and a public abattoir, stating that the necessary Orders in Council were being prepared, and would be gazetted as soon as possible.—Received. Mr O. J. Morell, Night Watchman, gave his usual satisfactory fortnightly reportno fires. _. , The Inspector, Mr R. J. Little, re* ported:—l have the honor to report to your Council that since I resumed duty I have been inspecting all over the Borough, and find everything in very fair orjler. The nightsoil and rubbish is regularly removed and carefully buried at tho depot. Health report: I have to report one case of typhoid fever, which has occurred in Cobden street, since your last meeting, a little girl agod 111 years. I have made an inspection of tno house and its situation, and cannot see anything that would be likely to cause fever, as tbe house is oil the ground and all tho surroundings are perfectly clean, and every care is exercised by the people living in the house. When notified of the ease I had the nightsoil removed as soon as possible, and tho box and closet disinfected with carbolic and lime. Tho Overseer (Mr M. Morgan) reported as follows :—The street-scraper ordered by your Council some ttme ago came to hand on the 13th January. I have put tho same together, which is now ready for use when required. I have raised and gravelled the footpath in Gladstone road on tho north side of the block between Carnarvon street and Disraeli street. Tarring: Better progress has been made with this work since last meeting. Tho new work done has been on Cobden street on tho south side of Gladstone and on Palmerston road. River bank, Read’s Quay : This footpath has boon shingled as authorised. I expect the gates to be ready in a few days. The footpath in Palmerston road on the south side of tho ' block, lying between Bright and Grey ■ streots, is very much out of shape. Part of this water-channel has been pitched. X would recommend that it be kerbed and filled in to the proper level and grade before it is tarred again or tbo channel completed. In some parts of tho town, tho kerbing is much decayed; it will be necessary in the near future that timbei be ordered for the same. Stone contract This contract is progressing favorably the stone delivered to date being 633; yards. I would recommend a progresi payment for tho same of ,£9l os. It was decided to do the tarring a suggested.
