BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

GI3BORNE DEFEATED BY . VICTORIA.

CONQUERS WELLINGTON AND

AUCKLAND.

(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night.

For the second day of the bowling tournament the weather was windy, with rain falling in the morning, but before nine o’clock it had changed to a glorious day, and play was resumed on keen drawing greens. Gisborne played tlieir first game against Victoria, and experienced very hard luck in not securing a victory. Coleman’s team scored fourteen out of the twentyone heads, but were nevertheless beaten by five points. Ponsford’s team won by throe points, leaving Gisborne two points behind on the aggregate.

The match between Gisborno and Wellington attracted a good deal of attention, but the Gisborne men never once left the issue in doubt, winning somewhat easily in both rinks. Coleman had a long lead of Maclean’s champion team, and finished five points ahead of tlieir opponents, while Ponsford more than held his own against Sample’s team, in which Ballinger played as number three. The victory of the Gisborne team was very popular, and they were the recipients of hearty congratulations from bowlers from all parts of the colony. The concluding game for the day was against Auckland, and produced the toughest struggle so far of the tournament. The scores were most even throughout, the teams in turn leading by a point or two. For the 20th head Coleman, playing against Towsey, was a tie, tho score being 20 all, whilst Ponsford, playing on the lower green, was two to the good. Towsey was lying three with one bowl dead on the Jack, when an effective drive from Gaudin gavo Coleman three; but tho Auckland number three, Porratt, drew the shot on to the Jack. Coleman twice drove at a difficult angle, hut failed to displace the shot, and Auckland scored one. Ponsford, however, had all the best of the concluding head against Culpan’s team, and scoring four points Gisborne won by four points on the aggregate. The double victory against Wellington and Auckland places Gisborno in a good position for the banuer, being at present second with others on the list. It is thought it is extremely doubtful that they will be able to hold this place. The Gisborne team had a great host of barrackers, including a great number of Gisborne residents and former residents.
