PRISON LABOR.

The success which has attended treeplanting operations carried out by prisoners at Waiotaku is looked upon by the Minister of Justice as a strong reason in favor of the setting up in the country of large penal establishments, the inmates of which would be engaged in gardening and farming. TERRACE GAOL COMPLAINT. An inquiry into the complaints recently made regarding the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, will be made by Messrs Haselden, S.M., and Poynton, Public Trustee. They are to receive the appointment as Commissioners on the return of the Governor from the Southern islands. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED.
The body found in the harbor last night has been identified as that of James Robertson, an old age pensioner. It is supposed he got into the water accidentally. TOM MANN.
Tom Mann, the English Labor loader, arrived to-day from London by the Ruapehu. He intends to settle in Wellington. When asked whether he would enter politics, he said he would probably do so, but it was not certain. ARRIVAL OF EMIGRANTS.
Mr Courtney, of Taranaki, who has introduced a largo number of settlers from the Old Country to this colony, arrived with another batch of emigrants by the Ruapehu to-day.
