Miss McLean, of Waustoad, lias been appointed mistress of the Morere school. Tho Misses Morgan’s Kindergarten and Preparatory School re-opens on February 3rd. A meeting of the general committee of the St. Patrick’s Sports is to be held at the Masonic Hotel on Friday evening. Captain Edwin wired at 1.13 p.rn. yesterday : “ Strong north to west and southwest winds; glass fall; sea decreasing.” At Tolago on Saturday a young man named Rakati Thompson, aged 18, was arrested on a charge of criminally assaulting a little native girl. Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., left for Wairoa yesterday morning, to hold the usual sittings of the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court in that town.

A meeting of the provisional committee and delegates of tho various branches of the Farmers’ Union in the Poverty Bay district is to be held at the Masonic Hotel this morning, at 10.30. The Chairman of the Harbor Board has called a special meeting of the Board for Thursday afternoon, with the view of taking steps to fill the position of Harbormaster, made vacant by the demise of Captain Thomson. Temporary arrangements have teen made for the carrying out of the duties. A meeting of the Loyal Gisborne du.venile Lodge was held last evening, Bro A. W. Kirk, Deputy Superintendent, presiding. A vote of sympathy to Bro. A. Thomson, the late treasurer of the Lodge, in his sad bereavement, was passed. Two new numbers were proposed. Tho Lodge has uoiv funds totalling about L'6o.

Wesley Church had a good attendance on Sunday morning. The choir rendered, several anthems in their usual efficient and pleasing manner. The soloists were Miss Freeman, and Messrs Vowles, Bussell, and Pickett. Mrs Vincent and Miss Oxenham rendered a duet very sweetly. The sermon by Bev. Mr Bothwel! was an eloquent and stirring one on “ The Fate of Godless .Partnerships,” and was founded on Proverbs xi., 21.

Thomson, P.G., in his sad bereavement, much sympathy being expressed for the brother. A lot of routine business was also transacted, two new members being initiated, and two more proposed. A meeting of farmers at Te Arai for the purpose of forming a branch of the Farmers' Union in that locality was held last week, Mr J. F. Flood in the chair. It was resolved to form a branch, the following committee being elected: Messrs 0. J. Parker, R. Parker, ,T. Sisterson, J. E. Floud, \V. Baird, C. White, R. Prestou, A. Wilson, W. Kirk, Craill, H. Nichol, H. King, and J. Jex-Blake. The officials elected wore : Chairman, J. E. Flood ; treasurer, W. M. Kirk ; secretary, W. Baird ; auditor, A. Crawford ; delegate to conference, C. J. Parker.
