SPORTING.

(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. Intelligence received from Sydney is to the effect that the late Gisborne-owned pony Ivan, which has started in numerous engagements, has been defeated each and every time. St. Michael is being backed heavily for the Wellington Cup, to be run on Monday. On his Auckland Cup form he should just about defeat Cannie Chiel and Melwood, the next fancied one in the race. We learn in Auckland that W. Pitt, formerly of Gisborne, has received a commission with a company of the Eighth Contingent in South Africa.
