THE COMMONWEALTH.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrigh} * Sydney, Jan. 1?. The Daily Telegraph says that, although the Commonwealth troubles in connection with the islands are just beginning, they are already threatening a formidable increase. The New Zealand scheme for annexation of Fiji can be regarded as postponed sine die, thanks to the opposition of the Australion Government. Since then, however, inu.-h more unpleasant possibilities have been suggested. That the experiment of acquiring possessory tales which the French have tried in the New Hebrides, so far successfully, will be repeated by the Germans is only to he expected. The residential rights at ;the islands have become territorial rightsj'and the private interests national interissts. 8o often does this occur that one aluboat suspects tho foreign trader of acting in concert with his Government, so insistently does the flag follow trade. The British Government must take such precautions as will prevent foreign companies obtaining rights in British islands, which is more than likely to result in those islands being alienated.
