THE ABANDONED SHIP.
BEING TOWED TO MELBOURNE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Jan. 14. The abandoned vessel at Wilson’s Promontory is the Port Patrick, bound from Algoa Bay to Newcastle. The crew of the tug Champion, after standing by all night, succeeded in putting three men aboard the Port Patrick. Shipping anchors, the tug started this afternoon to tow her to Melbourne. So far as is known, the Patrick is undamaged. The actual facts of the abandonment will not be known till the arrival of the Abergeldie with the crew, but the captain of the steamer Woolorora, which arrived to-day, supplies a probable explanation. After leaving Melbourne, the Woolorora encountered a fierce sudden storm. The Patrick, which was then in the vicinity of Wilson’s Promontory, was evidently caught napping, and driven to the dangerous position where she was seen to be abandoned. All sails were set, but most of them were blown to ribbons. The Patrick was going to Newcastle to load coal for South America, and was in charge of Captain Galloway.
