With reference to America's proposal to purchase the Danish West Indies, thriving of Denmark assured a deputation that the welfare of the Danish Indies would be safeguarded. He was unable, he said, owing to negotiations now proceeding to enter into details.
London, Jan. 14.
Whitaker Wright, Deputy-Chairman of the London and Globe Finance Corpora tion, in liquidation, has been examined by the Court of Bankruptcy. The accused said that engineers’ treachery had been misleading the London and Globe Corporation regarding the value of LakeView Consols mine. Tho outbreak of the war had completed the collapso of the undertaking. At an inquest on the body of a man killed in the riot at Lloyd George’s proBoer meeting at Birmingham on December ISth, a verdict was returned of manslaughter by an unknown policeman.
Sydney, Jan. 14.
Lieutenant-Governor Darley underwent a successful operation to-day. The latest reports of his condition are satisfactory. Up to a late hour to-night, there was no information as to the name of the vessel abandoned in the vicinity of Wilson’s Promontory. She is a fullrigged ship. Tho position is reported to bo dangerous. The tug Champion has left Melbourne to render assistance.
