CHESS TOURNMENT.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. The third round of the Chess Tournament was played yesterday. Miles defeated Jowitt after a long struggle. In the Grierson v. Jacquet match, the former opened with a pawn to tho king’s fourth, Jacquet replying with tho Sicilian defence. Black won a pawn on the 12th move, followed by the exchange on the 20th move. Black won on the GGth move. The match Forsyth v. Barnes created groat interest. Tho champion having the opening, Barnes played two knights in defence, which developed into the Guiocopiano game. About the middle of the game, Barnes initiated tho attack, resulting in the loss of the champion’s queen. Barnes retained the advantage, and won aftor a hard struggle. Barnes subsequently beat Edwards. This completes the first half of the tournament, the scores being: Barnes, 2 wins Edvards, 2 losses Forsyth, 1 win, 1 loss Grierson, 1 win, 2 losses Jacquet, 2 wins, 1 loss Jowitt, 3 losses Miles, 8 wins Each of the Southern players has had a bye, the Auckland competitors rccoiving theirs this week.
