BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night, there being present : The Mayor (Mr Townley) and Cra Kennedy, Miller, Lysnar, Hepburn, Jones, Bright, and Mason. A telegram was receivod from the Hon. Hall-Jones stating that the applications in regurd to the abattoirs and cemetery were being attended to by the Lands and Agricultural Department. On the motion of Cr Lysnar, it was resolvod that a communication be sent urging that the issuing of the proclamation be mado as soon as possible. Tho Council was Reminded by Government of the steps to be taken in regard to j the statutory half-holiday. It was agreed that the usual steps bo taken at the first meeting in January, a special meeting thereafter being called. Tho Treasury Department forwarded forms of receipts and expenditure in regard to domains, so_that the audits could bo made.

Mr M. Morgan, Road Overseer, reported Stone contract: This contract is not progressing vory fast, the weather not being favorable I for carting. Stone delivered the last month, 1604 cubic yards,

together with 305 cubic yards of last report, making a total of 4654 yards delivered into yard to date. Tho contractor for quarrying the metal desiring a progress payment, I would recommend tho payment of .£52 7s 4i d, being tho price of 4654 yards at 2s 3d per yard. Lowe street: As authorised, I havo removed tho old bridgo crossing this street, and laid pipes the whole width of the rond from channel to channel, thus making the street wider at this point. There are two poplar trees at the corner of Lowe street and Kahutia street, which makes tho lamp at this corner almost useless ; complaints of same having been mado, I

would recommend their removal. Tarring: I have not been able to make much progress with this work, the weather being against it, but every opportunity has been taken to advance the work, tho work requiring two coats, being the first to receive attention. Tho gas-engine is now fitted with an extra pulley, which enables us to get tho full advantage of the engine b,y crushing and pumping at the same time.

It was decided to have the trees re moved.

The Inspector, Mr J. R. Little, reported that everything was proceeding satisfactorily in the borough. Auctioneers’ licenses were granted as follows J. B. Kells, G. R. Wyllio, A. F. Kennedy, and J. W. Bright,
