GENERAL CABLES.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Brisbane, Dec. 23. Tho steamer Duke of Devonshire, which went aground near Hannibal Island, is in a safe position. Tho cargo is being lightered. Sydney, Dec. 23. Mr See has received a reply from Mr Seddon stating that probably Sir Joseph I Ward used the word “unloaded,” not “ unplaced ” in referring to the New South Wales loan. Mr See doos not think the explanation satisfactory. The whole loan was subscribed, and whether the brokers unloaded did not matter so long as tho State received the money on the due date. Since the Premier expressed this opinion the full text of Sir Joseph Ward’s speech has been published. Melbourne, Dec. 23. The Federal Postmaster-General opens negotiations to-day in respect to a uniform
agreement with tha Eastern Extension Company re the Cape cable. The AttorneyGeneral points out that when it took over tho State post oflices tho Federal Government took over obligations in connection with the Capo cable, and became similarly responsible with regard to tho Pacific cable.
