THE UNCANNY NORTH.

REPORTS LIKE CANNON. VALLEY FILLED WITH BLACK SMOKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Mr Sheppard, guide at Waimunga, reports that there was a great eruption at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, probably the most severe since 1886. It was heralded by two loud reports like cannon, followed by the upheaval of a black column to a height of 1000 feet, which in descending filled the whole valley. The noise was deafening, owing to the stones meeting in mid-air and making a noise like the crack of musketry. After the eruption a dense white cloud of steam arose, arose, ascending thousands of feet above the summit of Tarawera.
