London, Dec. 17.
The English press is delighted and surprised at tho result of the test match, which it states is a vindication of Maclaren’s selection of bowlers.
Sydney, Dec. IS,
Maclaren, interviewed, said ho was exceedingly proud of the victory. He considered the Australian team the best that could havo been picked, excepting Clarke, who was unable to play. They played the game as it should have been played, but fortune was unfavorable to them. The conditions were equal to both sides. His team were all in the very best condition, and won on the bowling. Tho batsmen were dismissed not because they batted badly, but because the bowling was perfect. The newspapers arc Hooded with criticisms and suggestions. It is generally admitted that the Australians were outcaptained and out-played in all departments. The re-selection of tho team is a universal demand.
One authority sums tho defeat up in this manner: “The Australians appeared awed and paralysed. Their nerve was gone. The only explanation was sheer bad batting, the result of something liko a panic.
Competent judges highly praise Braumi’s bowling. Hit; “ leg theory ”is a comparatively recent innovation, and was a novelty to most of the Australian batsmen.
