AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
THE TEST MATCH.
[Special to Times.) Auckland, last night. The crushing defeat of the Australians in the first test match at the hands of Maclaren’s team has been the chief topic of conversation among cricketers to-day. Although it was generally thought after the second day’s play that England would win, it was never thought that the margin of victory would be so overwhelming as an innings and 124 runs. The second test match will begin at Melbourne on Ne\v Year’s Day.
IDEAL,
There is still some doubt whether Ideal will arrive from Napier to take part in the Auckland Cup. Up to four o’clock yesterday space on the Waihora could not be obtained, though Mr Ormond had decided to ship by that boat leaving to-night.
GISBORNE HORSES.
At Ellerslie this morning Materoa and Tauhei started off from the six furlongs post, the first named winning tho last five furlongs in 1.9 25, finishing well in front of her companion.
