CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of tho Caledonian Society of Poverty Bay was held last night, Mr J. C. Nisbett (vieo-president) presiding. Tho following report was presented :
“ The annual sports were held on 14th Fobruary, 1901, at tho Park Grounds, and attracted competitors from all part of tho colony. The attendance of the general public was not, however, so good as might have been expected, with tho result, as will be seen from the balance-sheet, that there was a deficit on them. Tho Society’s Educational Gold Medal was won by Miss Dorothy Chrisp, of Gisborne. Tho society joined with the other Caledonian Societies of tho colony in extending to our compatriot, Sir Hector Macdonald, a hearty welcome to our shores. Owing to the falling off of tho interest shown by the public in sports gatherings, and the foar that the society may in case of a wot day be left with a large liability on its hands without a resorvo fund to meet tho contingency, the members should carefully consider the question of tho advisability or otherwise of postponing the boiling of Bports till we can procure a larger permanent membership. On behalf of tho society, we beg to thank all those who so kindly assisted us in carrying out tho sports gathering.” The balance-sheet showed tho receipts to be £lO5 12s Bd, the expenditure leaving a credit balance of £l4 8s 3d. There were no liabilities, while the value of the assets amounted to £3l 10s 9d, including the credit balance in hand. There was some discussion as to whether Bports should bo held, the expressions being rather against it. It was agreed to adjourn the meeting until next week, so that any desirous to see the sports hold could give their opinions accordingly.
