CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
ELECTRIC LIGHTING SCHEME.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. The City Council has passed a motion that in its opinion the time has come when steps should be taken to acquire the land from the Bank of New Zealand, to widon Colombo street corner, owing to the growth of traffic at that spot. There is a feeling among some peoplo that the sebemo to obtain power for electric lighting and traction from Waimakariri river should be discarded in faVor of one dealing with steam, many citizens being somewhat discouraged at the fact chat tho Waimakariri scheme has been bung up for at least a year. The City Council has decided to obtain information in regard to establishing an electrical plant connection with the destructor now in course of construction. It is stated that if this can be carried out thero will be sufficient power to light the city and streets, and have something to spare.
