PREMIER AT CHEVIOT.

RELIEF PROPOSALS,

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night

The Premier visited Cheviot to-day. He met the Relief Committee in tho evening, when a report was presented, stating that 60 applicants assessed, their damage by earthquakes at £3340, and there were other applications, some of which the Committee had yet to investigate, and in other cases thought the applicants were in a position to bear the loss. The relief funds in Christchurch amount to about £BOO, and would probably reach £IOOO. An expert builder estimated the cost of roughly repairing tho houses of those who most needed help at £755, and the chattels destroyed in those cases would be worth about £ISOO. The Premier said that after what the colony had done in other cases he felt that if the public subscriptions could be raised to £IOOO the Government would take the responsibility of providing the other £I2OO required.
