MAIL STEAMERS.

SPRECKLES’ LITTLE MOVE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Dec. 5. Referring to Mr Spreekles’ proposal to approach the Commonwealth, the Daily Telegraph says : —“ In one respect Australia will be better by New Zealand’s refusal to pay 1125,000 a year. The steamers have to run in order to obtain an American subsidy, and it is almost a case of taking what Australia will give or to go without a colonial subsidy. Unless the service presents the attraction of rare cheapness there is not much hope for the Queensland scheme. The Vancouver line has the advantage of being British, and it might suit the Commonwealth, with the co-operation of New Zealand, to subsidise it in preference to the ’Frisco service."
