T inf filiation is being sought for the ■ >os l of putting before a Conference 10 Chambers of Commerce to be held . Wellington about the middle of Janus next. A DIVORCE.
Among the divorce cases set down for hearing here on Friday is a petition by Annie Ruth Crawford' for dissolution of her marriage with W. G. Crawford. Petitioner is a daughter of Mrs Moeller, the well-known hostess of the Occidental Hotel, and respondent is a son of the lato George Crawford, one of Wellington s earliest settlers and merchants. Alleged adultery is the main ground of the petition. MINISTER FOR LANDS.
I have authority for denying a statement which has gone the rounds of the press that the Minister for Lands has any idea of resigning his portfolio. MR WILFORD. Mr T. M. Wilford, Member for Wellington Suburbs, submits himself next week to a delicate throat operation at the hands of two skilled local practitioners. The trouble is a growth at the base of the tongue, which it is feared may turn out to be cancer. If so Mr Wilford expresses his intention of going to London for treatment by one of the specialists in this complaint. OMINOUS. I happen to know that there are special reasons just now for tho exercise of particular care for the health of the people of a certain city in the North. A scare occurred a week ugo, but as doctors differ as to the nature of tho case it is being kept quiet. Anyhow the patient is reported to be doing woll at present, and precautions have been taken to cope immediately with possible danger to tho community.
ORIENTAL HOTEL FIRE. Twenty-six pounds in gold and silver recovered from tho debris of the Oriental Hotel fire has been handod to Mrs Watson, licensee. Most of tho sovereigns and half-sovereigns were but slightly defaced by the heat, but the silver had melted. Mrs Watson had £l5O in cash in her room at the time of the outbreak, and she had not time to save any of it when making her escape. A BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT. Returns for tho matinee performance given by the theatrical profession last Saturday in aid of tho sufferers by fire have now been made up, and show the handsome net result of just upon £163.
