GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Committee took place last night, there being present: Messrs Matthews (chairman), Morgan, Humphreys, Hookey, Sawyer, Graham, and Major Winter. A good deal of general business was transacted. In his report the Headmaster complained of the poorness of the attendance, and urged that parents should do their best to see that the children get the full benefit of regular attendance at school. In his report the Inspector referred to (he high age of many of the pupils in the infant school. It was pointed out by Mr Morgan, during the discussion, that where many children had to travel so far to school it was not to be expected that they would be so well advanced at an early age as children in a town like Napier. A sub committee was appointed to confer with the committee appointed in regard to the proposed side school on the Whataupoko, Discussion took place on a suggestion
there there should he a separate education district for Poverty Bay, and on the motion of Mr Morgan, a'sub committee was formed to make a report on the subject. It was resolved that the school close for the holidays nu December to, and reassemble on February 1. It was decided that a picnic and swimming sports bo held in the last week of the holidays, and it was agreed that there should be a meeting of friends to organise the affair.. The Committee .vent into closed-door committee, and a long discussion took place.
I The following letter was received fro® Mr Strong:— i Sir, —I have the honor to inform you that the Wanganui Education Board has appointed me Special Master in Mathematics. Languages, and Science in the District High School and in the Technical School at Wanganui. I am induced to accept this position on account of the fact that I shall, to a large extent, have a free hand in my work, and shall moreover have the opportunity I have long wished for of making myself familiar with the various branches of kindergarten and technical work. I may say it is the only appointment of its kind that could induce me to leave an educational district in which I have already received so many (to me unusual) marks of consideration. I am not required at \\ anganui until next February, but wish to resign now, as I think this course fairer both to the School Committee and to the Board. I have, therefore, to give two months’ notice of my intention to relinquish my present position at the end of January. Before leaving Gisborne I wish to express to the Committee the great pleasure I have had in my brief association with them and with the Headmaster and children of the Gisborne School. Never have my relations with school children been of a more cordial nature, aud this I attribute largely to the children themselves. —I have, etc., T. B, Strong, M.A., B.Sc. It was resolved to accept the resignation, and to call for applications for the position,
