General Hamilton is only 48 years old, and is a son of a soldier. His record in South Africa has been equalled by few officers there. He was in command of the infantry in the successful action of Elandslaagte, and for his personal valor in the field he was recommended for the Victorian Cross. He was Sir George White’s principal officer during the long siege of Ladysmith, and did much to save the city from capture in the desperate fight of January 6 1900.
