In England considerable importance is attached to the departure for South Africa of Major-General Sir lan Hamilton, Military Secretay at the War Office. S’ir lan is to serve a.s chief of stall to Lord Kitchener, and is said to
carry with him the plan of campaign recently adopted at a meeting of the War Council in London that is designed to end the war in South Africa before -the commencement of the celebrations in connection with the Coronation of King Edward. General Hamilton is only 48 years old, and is a son of a soldier. His record in South Africa has been equalled by few officers there. He was in command of the infantry in the successful action of Elandslaagte, and for his personal valor in the field he was recommended for the Victorian Cross. He was Sir George White’s principal officer during the long siege of Ladysmith, and did much to save the city from capture in the desperate fight of January 6 1900. He commanded the colonial division ol Lord Roberts’ Army, and did good service during the advance on tho author of several books,
