AMALGAMATION

A meeting of representatives from the Wellington City Council and Melrose Borough Council to-night passed a resolution favorable to amalgamation of the two bodies, and appointed a committee to draw up a scheme of union. NEW ZEALAND BUTTER. The Secretary of the National Dairy Association Cas received communications from firms at Capetown and Du- lan in reference to New Zealand butter. According to Capetown merchants the quality of the butter received from this colony at the Cape has not been satisfactory. This has been particularly noticeable when the butter has gone through Australian dairies. There is, however, a certain trade for tine quality shipped regularly. Durban information is to the effect that it would not be advisable to send large shipments to that place at first, but small consignments would enable a test of the market to be made. The quality of all butter shipped must be of the finest. For Capetown the butter is preferred in bulk with a certain quantity in tins. In Durban buyers demand pound pats. TOTALISATOR TICKETS. The Supremo Court was ongagod all day hearing a charge against Frank M. Clark, of having stolen £6 15s from the proprietor of the totalisator at Mastertou. The case for the Crown was that Clark collected dividends on the second horse in the race with first horse dividends ; tho former amount being larger than tho latter, and refuse 1 to refund tho difference. The evidence for tho defeuco was not concluded when the Court roso. > A GOOD EFFORT.
St. John's Ambulance Association is making an effort to raise funds to permanently employ a nurse to attend to sick poor.
