FINED £IOO,
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Wanganui, last night. At tho Court to-day a man named James McAineh was charged with having on October 22nd, at Wanganui, made a false declaration purporting to he a declaration of the value of goods imported by him into the colony of Now Zealand. The evidence was to the effect that on October 2nd a parcel containing opal rings and a brooch came by post addressed to defendant, who called himself an opal merchant. The invoice of the goods was £l7. The Customs Department being suspicious that the value of the goods was understated, had tho same valued, with the result that tho cost price was found to be about £'3s. The goods were seized, and tho man charged with attempting to defraud the Customs. A fine of £IOO was imposed.
