MEAT FOR WAR DEPARTMENT.

The Premier lias received a cable from tho Agent-General intimating, with reference to contracts for the supply of meat for the army in South Africa, that the War Office will receive offers by cable if received by January Gth next. A PICKPOCKET. A pickpocket was caught rod-handed on Saturday afternoon outside tho Princess Theatre. He dropped a purso and bolted, but was captured by a constable. Two ladies’ purses wore found on him, one of which lias been identified. He gave his name as Fred. Matthews, lately from Christchurch.
