THE FEDERAL TARIFF.
AND THE FIJI TRADE,
By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright Sydney, Nov. 27. The representatives of 77 Mercantile firms and Shipping Companies of Sydney have forwarded a petition to Mr Kingston, stating that they view with alarm the almost certain destruction of trade between Sydney, Fiji, and other Pacific Islands if me Federal tariff'is adopted. They ask Government to take into special consideration the trade of the Commonwealth with the Islands, and place on the free list such products as copra, cocoanuts, bananas, peanuts, pineapples, bechc-demer, vanilla, j pearl shell, and turtle shell. The petition j reminds Mr Kingston that recently, when j New Zealand was trying to bring about j the federation of Fiji with New Zealand, i
the Federal Government strongly protested to Mr Chamberlain against the movement. . It would therefore appear to ! be inconsistent for the Federal Government now to so tax the products of Fiji • i •■'•ade must undoubtedly be forced to ~ 3 to the Commontna. New Zealand anu ... wealth. i
