Auckland, Saturday. Jn the Supremo Court James Fowler, for brutally beating his wife, was sentenced to throe years’ hard labor. Hawera, Saturday.
Six sections in the Tokaora blook were disposed of yesterday. Though the applicants were sufficient in number to account for all the sections with the exception of the hotnbslead and grounds, cross applications made it impossible to allocate all. For instance, several applicants had put in papers for two or throe sections, but as soon as they had drawn one each, had to be content, while some of the unsuccessful candidates, not having applied for more than one section, were left landless. The opinion is that, despite the few applications, the demand is unsatisfied for land in small sections, and that the demand is not catered for to the extent it should be.
Timaru, Saturday.

Particulars concerning the Te Auto lire show that Mrs Edwards, another Maori woman, and four children were sleeping in a wiiure. They left the candle burning, which fell on the mats they were sleeping on. The old woman made her escape, and Mrs Edwards got out with the baby. All efforts to rescue the others were unavailing, and they were burned to cinders. The oldest, a girl named Maria, aged 10, evidently suffocated, was found lying on the bed. The other two, a bov, Tu Ponaka, aged ill, and a girl, Pope, aged 2 years, were found near the door. Edwards was away from home at the time.
