MOONLIGHT CONCERT.

GREAT SUCCESS. The moonlight concert held last night in the grounls of the Misses Morico was a groat success, and will yield a substantial sum towards the funds of the AV.C.T.U. coffeo and free reading rooms. The night was a beautiful one, and a very large number of people attended. A great amount of trouble had been gone to in providing for the occasion, an amplo supply of seats being placed in the garden to accommodate those who desired to sit. All around there were hung a great many Chinese lanterns, which had been kindly supplied by Messrs Dalrymple, Townley, East, and others. The grounds were very suitable for such a gathering, and the kindness of the Misses Morico in throwing them open for the use of the Union was very much appreciated. Tho concert was under the conductorship of Mr Massey, a good programme being presented, and the Rifle Band (under Mr McKillop's conductorship), added greatly to the ovening’s pleasure. The concert opened with a selection by tho Band, after which Miss Heany sang, “I trust you still.” All tho itoms wero received with enthusiasm, and warmly applauded. A mandolin solo was given by Miss AVinkelmann, followed by a song by Mr Taylor, a cornet duet by Messrs Lionel Sherriffandß. Smith; a song by Miss Gray ; Braga Serenata by Mr Kane, with violin obligato by Mr Massey ; song, Miss Ferris : song, Mr F. Teat; and the first part of the programme wound up with a Maori chant by the students of To Ran College, the latter being so much appreciated that no denial would be taken to the demand for an encore. Refreshments were then supplied, no ligbttask for the committee and assistants, seeing that there was such a large number of people present. The undertaking was admirably carried out, and, though the trouble was groat, the tea and cakes helped to increase the sociability of the people. A pleasing speech was made by His AVorship the Mayor, who presided. He briefly alluded to the work of the Union, and tho good object for which tho funds were to be devoted. He warmly congratulated the committeo and the Misses Morico on tho great success of i the gathering, and on behalf of j the committee thanked the people gener- I ally for tho support they had accorded. AA'hilo refreshments were being partaken of, Mr Adair’s graphophone helped to entertain the audience, and later on the Rifle Band gave a fine selection of tunes, winding up with “Auld Lang Syne ” and the National Anthem. Accompaniments j were kindly played by Miss Gray and j Mesers E. Chrisp and Massey. The organisation of the affair was in tho hands of the Union, among the most active workers being Mesdames Spence, Skillicorn, Paterson, AVitty, Scotter, Baker, McLeod, Adatr, Dods, Norris, Graham (President), Misses Morice and Pollock, assisted by a great many ladies. The crockery was supplied gratuitously by Messrs ’•Townley;-Reynolds," McKee, and St. Andrew’s Christian Eudeayor. Messrs Partington and Jameson kindly did tbs carting free, and many people in addition to those on the committee assisted byproviding cakes, ete. The committee desire that thanks be tendered to those who gave assistance, and also to those who contributed to the entertainment, especially the Rifle Band.
