THE EARTHQUAKES.
THE SHOCKS CONTINUE. [By Telegraph—Press Assoeiation.] Wellington, last night. The postmaster at Cheviot telegraphed to the Secretary of the Department this , morning that several sharp shocks have | been felt since I a.m., the last at 7.45. | The effect has been to renew the appre- | liensions of the people. Six small families ■ are leaving to-day for homes provided by j sympathisers at-Christchurch. Christchurch, last night. j Yesterday a gathering of over 100 set- j tiers interviewed tho Hon. Mr Hall Jones j at Cheviot in connection with the pushing , through of the railway and the opening up i of the Port road. The Chairman said the completion of tho railway was of vital in- j torest to the place, and the longer it was j delayed the longer would settlement be j kept back. Mr Hall-Jones, replying, said I the Cheviot people had passed through an i experience which no men or women in j New Zealand had ever gone through. His present visit would be productive of good in the way of hastening the construction of the railway, and any course decided on by him and his colleagues regarding the Port road would be their best interests. He hoped it would not be many days bofore assistance would bo accorded to those who bad suffered bv the earthquakes. Reuowod shocks of earthquake at Cheviot have re-aroused the apprehensions of the residents, about forty of whom left this morning, Mr Hall-Jones arranged for free passes on the railways for them.
Tho bridges will be repaired by the Government and the Crown Lands Ranget* will spend several days in the district ascertaining the damage to settlers’ houses and the roads. Mr Hall-Jones left for Christchurch and
goes north by to-night’s steamer. Telegraphing at 10.15, tho Cheviot postmaster says a recurrence of the shocks has revived the panic. Over forty men, women, and children left this morning by coach.
