Monks and Nuns.
EXODUS FROM FRANCE. Paris, Sept. 2 8. A general exodus of monks and nuns from France is taking place, and thousands of converts are closing owing to the new law regulating religious orders. Only about one hundred and sixty members of the orders have decided to comply with the law, the rest preferring exile. Some French Jesuits are going to Spain, Belgium and Italy, but more to the United States, where about five hundred new colleges will be erected. The time limit granted by the Government expires Oct. io. After a violent controversy, in which the Pope directly intervened, the makers of the famous Chartreuse will remain near Grenoble, though the other monasteries of the same order will close. The project to transfer the liqueuor factory to Pennsylvania failed mainly because the needed herbs do not grow well there.
