AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. THIRD DAY'S RACES. * TAUHEI RUNS SECOND IN THE PUBLICANS’ PURSE. ; [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night. For the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, the third day, the weather was 1 wet and a strong westerly gale was blow- ’ in». The attendance was nevertheless 1 large. The principal race, the Ascot Handicap, was annexed by the top-weight Rosella m good stvie from a strong favorite ml or " mula, \vho acted as runner-up. The Hunt Cup was won by Tarragon. The rider of Peter Simple, a returned trooper named George Wilkinson, broke his thigh through his mount corning to grief at the sod wall in front of the stewards’ stand. Puffing Billy turned round at the start, and did not take part in the race, and Tiki, closely attended .by Hinemoa, was the quickest to negotiate the first fence. Past the stand and through the bottom turn Tiki was still holding his own, but along the back Royal Conqueror closed up to the leader, and through the cutting led Tiki, then came Hinemoa, with Chancellor next in attendance. As they raced across i tho top stretch Chancellor 11. worked his way into second place, but Royal Conqueror holding his own over the last fence, ) ran home an eas j winner by four lengths i from Chancellor 11., Tiki seven lengths away third, in company with Hinemoa. Formula was quickest to move, only to give way to San Patricia as they drew past tho main stand, and she set tho pace along the back stretch a length to the good of Sparkling Water. Through the cutting Sparkling Water was on terms with the leader, and the pair were a length clear of Formula and Tukapa. As they dashed down to the half-mile post San Patricia was attended by Volee, half a length away. The field bunched fairly as tho distance was rounded, but Rosella cut down the opposition on the lawn rails, and scored by tho best part of two lengths from Formula, with Val Rosa well up third. Marine led Tuirne ascending the hill for tho first time, but Tarragon was first over tho double in front of the stand, closely attended by Cronje. From this out Tarragon, Cronje, and Tuirne wove racing in front in close company, and as the post and rails on tho hill was taken for the last timo Cronje lost his rider, and Tarragon coming down the hill, came into the straight with a commanding lead, and won easily by a dozen lengths from Woodcock, who set sail after the leader as tho hill was descended. Swagsman was first to commence, and made all tho pace to the borne turn, where Wellcast ran into the lead, but, failing to stay it out in tho straight, Northumberland shot up on the inside, and scored by a length from Idas. Camille jumped away in front, and at the home turn was fighting for supremacy with Lady Avon, and Tauhei was seen to be coming fast in the straight. Tally-ho Steeplechase, of lOOsovs ; about three miles. 365 E. J. Sago’s Cannongate, 12.9, Stewart 1 166 F. B. Ross’s Voltiguer 11., 11.3, Burns 2 Also started: 140 Sudden 11.10, and 46 Pungarehu 9.7. Soon after the start Pungarehu got immersed in the water jump, aud Sudden came to grief two fences further on, leaving Cannongate to show Voltiguer 11. the way home and score comfortably by four lengths. Marine led to the stand, when Miss Drury and Tip went |into the lead, and the three named were in company till the hurdle at the cutting was negotiated, where Miss Drury and Tangahoe fell, and Tip came on with a strong lead, and stalling off a challenge from Boxer in the straight, won by half a length.
