MESSRS J. D KELLY AND CO.’S STUDIO.
Lovers of art will be well repaid by a visit to the art studio of Messrs J. D. Kelly and Co. (late of Auckland, and Bathurst street, Sydney), where a fine exhibition of oil portraits is displayed. The collection includes the life-like portraits of a number of local residents, together with the likenesses of many notable Maori chiefs of the North Island. The pictures have bean inspected by a great many persons, and it is generally admitted that for excellence of workmanship and finish the portraits require a lot of beating. One portrait that calls for special attention is that of Nurse liedstone, taken in Gisborne prior to her leaving for South Africa. The portrait is from a photo showing Miss Redstone in her Red Cross costume, and is a true likeness of the young lady in question. Included in the collection there is also a fine oil portrait of His Worship the Mayor, the size of the picture being 24 by 20. Amongst the most interesting of the portraits of Native chiefs is that of Hakumanu, a leading Rangatira in the Bay of Plenty. A great variety of photogravures are also on view. Messrs Kelly and Co. stock a large quantity of photographic materials, as well as mouldings and mounts, the latter being cut to order. The studio is well-stocked, and persons requiring a few nice pictures at a moderate price would do well to call on the firm. Messrs Kelly and Co. have excellent facilities for enlarging portraits from photos, and a special feature is made of this branch of the business.
