Sir,— l am getting tired of the Church and Liquor subject. Why not let the Church go its own gait, some for and some against prohibition, and some not caring a rap either way ? Then let us get to something practical, Here is my suggestion : Give Mr John Townley or some other trusted citixen full control over pubs, and totalisator, with instructions that the profits are to be devoted to public works. I venture to say that if that were done Gisborne would in five to ten years have paved block roads, asphalted footpaths, electric light and motive power, water and drainage : that the Ixaiti hill and those at the back of Whutaupoko would be free parks to the people, that there would be a national camping and picnic ground at Wainui, and that the Waikanae beach would have such residential buildings and bathing places erected thereon as would ; make it the favorite summer resort of j holiday-makers throughout the colony. I In less than ten years the money sunk j would be yielding 13 per cent. ; in less j than 23 years everything would be paid i for, and present property holders would find that the value of their individual property had increased by 500 per cent.
