ALLEGED MURDER.

A WOMAN DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED. THE HUSBAND ARRESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. A woman named Elizabeth Tritt. wife of Carl Tritt, labourer, died at Kaiapoi on Friday night under circumstances which caused the two doctors attending her to refuse to give a certificate. The police were communicated with, and opened an inquest on the body lasr night before Dr McArthur, coroner. After several wit-

nesses were examined the inquest was adjourned until Tuesday.

Immediately afterwards Tritt was arrested on a charge of murder, and takut before Dr McArthur and remanded till after the close of the inquest. From the evidence taken it appears that Tritt, a widower with three sons, the eldest of whom is 18 years, married his second wife, who was a Miss Meßefh. of Kirwoo, at Oxford in January last. She was confined last month, and confessed to her husband that he was not the father of the child. Before Mrs Tritt's death she told neighbors that the bruises on her body were caused by her husband beating her with a hoavV strap, and the two doctors who made the post-mortem agree that the injuries, which could have been indicted in that way, were the cause of death. The

post-mortem revealed extensive internal injuries. Tritt was brought to Christchurch today and lodged in goal. Inspector Ellison lias left for Kaiapoi to make further investigations.
