By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Oct. 19. There is consternation in naval circles by the news that the Federal tariff will apply to warships. The opinion is that this is an oversight. The Admiral has made representations to the Federal Government. Fremantle, Oct. 19. Tho steamer Scotia has arrived, after laying the Coeos-Fremantle section of tho Capo cable. A start will be made with the laying of the shoro end to-day. Melbourne, Oct. 19. The Ago says regarding the suggestion that New Zealand should come into the Federal mail contract and reap its advantage by establishing a fast service to Wellington and the Bluff for the carriage of mails, it is hardly likoly the Federal Government would _ consent te- ‘•ontrihnto towards a service in which tho States have no special interest. If New Zealand wants an independent mail service, the Vancouver route appears to offer the best prospects of success. The lino would have to be maintained with modern highclass steamers. Such a service, there is reason to believe, would command a subsidy from Canada, whilst the Imperial authorities might do something in the same direction to establish all British lines via tho Pacific with Australasia.
