Ilawley, Collector of Customs, with the following figuros showing the extent of the direct trade from this port with Australia and indicating in some measure how local farmers may bo effected by the new tariff. Exports from Gisborne to | Australia for twelve months ending 80th September, 1901 A' Harley, ‘2740 bushels ... ‘296 Maize, 58,012 bushels ... 6881 Beans, 51 bushels ... 10 Hides, 1420 in number ... 1895 Potted meat, 81cwt. ... ‘284 Seeds, 1108 cwt 1132 Tallow, 49 tons 690 Linseed, 153 cwt 112 Potatoes, 47 tons... ... 188 Miscellaneous ... ... 117 Total 11,055 The duty on barley, maize, etc., under the tariff is Is 6d per hundred pounds ; tinned meats, twopence per pound ; potatoes, one shilling per cwt.
