| THE NEWMARKET MEETING. J By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyrighi London, Oct. 4. At the Newmarket Meeting the Jockey Club Stakes resulted in Pietermaritzburg 1 being first, Epsom Lad second, and Diamond .Jubilee third. HAWKE'S BAY RACES. I (Special to Times.) j Auckland, last night. ! The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring j Meeting promises to afford interesting j sport to-morrow. The fields in some of I the races are very good, and the meeting I of the two-year-olds, which have been j brought from different parts of the colony, j will be one that racing men and breeders alike will be looking forward to. The following are the acceptances and anticipations : Hack Handicap Hurdles, 50 sovs; 14 miles. Waterport 11 3 Wakeiyn ... 9 3 K. Jam ... 10 3 Moleskin ... 9 0 Chris ... 9 10 Of the quintette I like the chances of Wakeiyn and K Jam, and they should finish in that order. King Edward Handicap, 300 sovs ; 1 mile, 110 yards.

There is a large field for this event, and probably ten or twelve of the acceptors will w e the post. Jabber, with 9.1 U, heads the list, whilst the fast Bosella has the ! handy impost of 8.8. Ostiak, 8.7, should be found a very tough customer, and will require a deal of beating. Another competitor that is well in is NVindwhistle, who is, I believe, in fairly good nick at present. The race bears a most open appearance, and in reducing the number to three I do not think i shall be far astray in selecting Ostiak, Bosella, and Windwhistlc, and with preference in the order named. First Handicap Hurdles, lOOsovs. ; lj miles. Dartmoor ... 10 8 Scallywag ... 10 0 jJerringcotte 10 it Waterport... 9 0 Voltaire ... 10 0 S.ylvanus ... 9 0 Stockade ... 10 0 The Phantom 9 0 There should be a good contest witnessed in this event, but the topweights have, I think, all tho best of tho adjustment. Dartmoor should win, with Dorriugcotto as his nearest attendant. Maiden Baco of oOsovs ; 7 furlongs. Mr Douglas Gordon’s b c Laureate, 3yrs Mr J. Goring Johnston’s b g Moleskin, aged Mr F. Winifred's br g Ontario, oyrs Messrs Sullivan and Sheehan’s Konocra Mr G. P. Donnelly’s hr g Fearlgun, 3yrs Mr T. H. Lowry’s b f la, Byrs Mr E. This should prove tho most interesting contest of the day, but the result will in a great measure depend on the naturo of the start. Stepdaughter, Northumberland, and Stcpdancc are likely to run well forward, and of the trio I like the chances of Stepdaughter, who has, I urn told, como through a most careful preparation. Welter Handicap, OOsovs ; 1 mile.

The last event of the day is the Flying Handicap, which should furnish an excellent race, l’alaver and Nonette are my fancies, and I expect to see them in first and second places respectively. By Telegraph—rress Association. Napier, last night. No work of importance was done on the Hastings track this morning. The course is in splendid order for to-morrow’s races, and, provided the weather, which at present is not very promising, keeps fine, the going should be excellent.

Grasspan turned the tables on Lord Randolph this morning, beating him by a couple of lengths in a half-mile spin, which was done in 525.
