The sale at Mark Way House is attracting considerable attention. Messrs Williams and Kettle bold their monthly stock sale at the Matawhero yards to-day. Messrs Dalgety and Co. advertise for a storeman, and Mr J. Macfariane for a station cook.

Somolhie smoked mullet and schnapper, also fresh oysters, are on sale at Warren’s lieh and oyster depot. The Ada .Delroy Variety Company appear at the Theatre lloyal on Monday and Tuesday evenings, tiio 1-ltli and loth inst.

The bazaar and concert to be held at Patutahi this evening should attract a large gathering of townspeople. The Committee have left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the function.

Several settlers at Tolago Hay have written complaining of the shortage of school accommodation at that place. A letter from Mr W. E. Holder, on this subject, will appear in to-morrow’s issue.

At the Patutahi bazaar this afternoon provision lias been made for a produce stall, and there will be an abundant supply of asparagus, rhubarb, and cauliflower, as well as numerous eases of oranges and lemons.

The New Zealand Clothing Company have a change of advertisement in this issue. The manager, Mr Ambridge, who returned from the South yesterday, brought a grand assortment of goods with him, and inspection of the same is invited.

A number of Natives left for Wellington by the steamer last night. They go, we understood, laden with petitions of various kinds, which it is their intention to present to Parliament. The Maori mind lias a great idea of the efficiency of petitions, and hence a batch is sent in every year.

An announcement in regard to the. stallion Ma/.eppa, which is to stand the season at Kilburn, Te Karaka, appears in this issue. Mazeppa is the right stamp to improve the breeding of horses in this district, and Ins services should bo sought after by stockowners. We understand that the property market in Auckland is keeping up well, and that a largo number of properties have been changing hands lately through Messrs Baker Bros.’ agency. This firm last week sold two large properties in the Empire City—one the premises in Willis Street, known as the Trocadero which changed hands at .£BSOO, and the other a block of shops on Lambton Quay which was sold for £4750. An Assyrian hawker had a narrow escape of losing his life, as well as his worldly goods, while plying his trade in Queen Charlotte Sound. A squall capsized the boat he was in, just inside the entrance of Endeavour Inlet, and the man had to cling to the boat for two hours before ho was rescued. The lighter swags drifted ashore, but the man’s coat, with about £l7 worth of silver in money and greenstone jewellery, sank and was lost.

A meeting of the Tolago Bay Racing Club was hold last evening, Mr W. Dixon presiding. The following officers were elected :—President, Mr A. Reeves; VicePresidents, Messrs W. A. Hood, J. Macfariane, and G. Spence ; judge, Mr J. A. Moore; treasurer, Mr W. Dobson; timekeeper, Mr G. Dixon ; totalisator steward, Mr W. Dobson; liandieapper, Mr C. D. Bennett; clerk of the course, Mr J. Cannon ; clerk of scales, .Mr J. B, Morris; secretary, Mr W. E. Holder; stewards, Messrs W. Lockwood, J. Kennedy, G. Fitzgerald, J. 11-. Shaw, C. E. Smith,']!. Merritt, W. A. Tulloch, IT, Glover, and J. E. Pettic. It was decided to appoint a Protest Committee of five members, the following being elected : Messrs W. Dixon, J. H. Martin, MV. Farrell, Holmes, and McDonald. It was agreed to raise the stakes in the Ilauiti Handicap £5 and the Farewell Handicap £5. The Scsretarv was empowered to grant district horses permission to leave the district for fourteen days to race.

A very pleasant ball was holt! at Mr Milner's Hall, Port Awanui, on Saturday, September dlst, in aid of the Port Awanui Brass Band Fund. Tho hall was nicely decorated by the members of the Band with ferns, white lillies, and flags. The music was supplied by Mr AVillio Walker and ATr- P. Wilkie, while Mr B, Milner acted as M.C. At intervals during the | evening songs were given by Mr Vincent | Jackson, who sang “ Island of dreams ” jin his usual pleasant manner. Mr W. Walker sang “ Cast aside,” and was loudly applauded. A pleasing feature of the evening was a song given by Miss ISosc Milner, a maiden of Id summers, who sang “ Take me back to Dixie,” for which she was loudly encored. A piano and cornet duet “ Coryshce,” by Mr and Mrs .1. Smith, was very much appreciated. Miss Reedy, of Tuparoa, was very successfill in her exhibition of a sailor's Hornpipe. Miss Milner played several selections on the piano, for which she was applauded. The supper, which was done full justice to. was supplied by Mr James Smith, of the Sea View Hotel. At the committee meeting of the Lawn Tennis Club, held last evening, it was resolved to set aside the tennis courts every I alternate Thursday and Saturday solely j for tho use of gentlemen, excepting the ! first Thursday and Saturday in each month, which will be general club days, when mixed fours will be arranged, so that the inferior players will have the advantage of some sets with the better players, and so improve the play of those beginning the game. The croquet court will be excepted from this by-law, and will always be open to those ladies wishing to play croquet. The entrance fees to the club were fixed at : Gentlemen 10s Gd, ladies os. It was also resolved that in future only members of recognised clubs would be * allowed to compete in the annual championship events. A committee was elected to draft new rules, those at present in use having been found to be too out-of-date for the working of the club. The opening day will take place on Saturday, 19th inst., when the Club will hold an “ At Home,” tickets for which may be had from the Secretary,
