Oct. 2. The Shamrock crossed the line too quickly, giving the Columbia the windward berth and twelve seconds lead. The breeze was light and tiukey and there was a wearisome beat to windward, the ShamI rock rounding the first mark 188 seconds j aiiead. The live miles reach on the port tack was covered when the time limit was reached, the Shamrock being threequarters of a mile ahead. The race will be vc-sailed on Thursday.

Lloyd’s Shipping Gazette states : —Tiie America Cup challenger’s passage to New York is practically the best on record. She crossed in 14 days 19 hours 58 minutes, as compared with the lirst Shamrock’s 15 days. Valkyrie 111, went out in 29 days 18 hours, and came back in 23 days. Valkyrie 11. crossed in 27 days from Uourock, while the Thistle covered the same distance coming eastward in 17 days. Galatea went out in 29 days, and Uenesta in 21 days. Navahoe came over to the Solent in 19 days ; but for pure sailing Vigilant has the record. Coming to the Clyde from New York in 1894 she had Tory Island abeam in 14 days 14 hours -14 minutes, and sailing home from Southampton she was at Sandy llook in 18 days. Both the Shamrocks, of course, were towed the greater part of the way. All the others sailed.
