POLICE COURT.

ALLEGED BURGLARY

(Before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.)

At tho Police Court yesterday morning a native named Wiremu Pohatu appeared in answer to two charges of burglary from the store of Mr W. L. Ilackett, hotelkeeper, Murcwai. Scrgt. Siddells conducted tho prosecution.

William Lawrence Ilackett, licensee of the Murcwai Hotel, stated that he kept a store in tho same building, attached by roof and verandah. lie knew the accused, who had resided at Murcwai during the last 18 months. On Sunday, the 29th September, witness saw the accused and Detective Nixon. Previous to this he had missed a number of articles from tho store. Tho detective on the Sunday showed him a number of articles similar to what had been stolen from his store. Tho articles were valued at £2 19s. Witness heard the accused admit to Detective Nixon that he had entered the store and taken the articles mentioned. Witness usually locked up about 10 o’clock, lie missed a coat and shirt two weeks ago.

Evidence having been given by Detective Nixon, the accused was committed for trial at the next criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, bail being allowed.
