CHINESE REBELS BURN MISSION STATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright Hongkong, Oct. 1. A number of Chinese rebels belonging to tire secret society known as the Triad , burned the Basle mission station at Lihaugtou. Kwang-tuug. The missionaries j escaped. Constantinople, Oct. 1. Brigands iu Macedonia have captured Miss Stone, a well-known American missionary. The American I onsul is arranging her release for £'27,000. Auckland, last night. Some eight months ago. says tire Samoavirche Zeitung. a damaging charge was brought against the individual members of the London Missionary Society in Samoa to the effect- that they had offensively intc-rferfered with the official arrangements for the celebration of the Emperor’s birthday. which happened to fall on a Sunday, and had attempted to raise disloyal feelings among the natives by stringently enforcing the religious observance ot that day. This serious charge of disloyalty was circulated throughout Germany, and caused considerable sutpicions as to the policy of tho London .Missionary Society iu Samoa. A “ defence ” was published by the Mission, M the request of the Governor. The result has been that, after the fullest investigation by the authorities at Samoa, and in Berlin, the members of the Mission have been completely cleared of any evil intention, and the charges declared absolutely without foundation.
