In Auckland scows’ tiags have been displayed at half-mast out of respect to the memory of the master and crew since the receipt of the disastrous news from Gisborne of the capsizing of the scow Whakapai on the East Coast. Mr Kenneth Humphreys, an old Gisborne boy who has been abroad during the pa~t nine years, arrived in Auckland this week as refrigerating engineer on the , ocean tramp Kangutira. Educated at tile Gisborne public school, Mr Humphreys soon Came into prominence as an engineer iii tlie firm of Humphreys and Davys, Gisborne. Soon afterwards the young Gisbornite was employed by Cable and Company, engineers, for years continually meeting with success. Humphreys being lull of ambition sailed for London in the Kaikoura, and remained in the employ of the River Plate Frozen Meat Company for three years. At this establishment he was successful in gaining a chief's certilieate. He then joined the IShaw-Savill Company. It is anticipated that the Rangatira will call at Gisborne shortly, and no doubt Mr Humphreys will be welcomed home by his many Gisborne friends.
