LADIES’ HOCKEY MATCH.

The return hockey match between the Gisborne and To Aral Ladies’ Clubs was played at the Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon, and attracted a largo gathering of spectators. The teams were as follows:—

To Arai: Goalkeeper, Miss N. Macfarlano; full-backs, Misses M. Tucker and E. Reynolds ; halves, Misses H. Johnson, M. Bradley, and A. Bradley; forwards, Misses W. Reynolds, Johnson (2), Theta Evans, and L. Tucker. Gisborne : Goalkeeper, Miss Cussens ; full-backs, Misses Davies (2); halves, Misses Ileany (captain), F. Sampson, and Butt ; forwards, Misses N. Sampson, F. McCredie, F. Bloomfield, AV. Adair, and E. Cussens.

Messrs E. IT. O’Meara and G. Bradley officiated as referees, and Mossrs A. Haworth and H. Evans acted as lineumpires.

The game was played in three spells, two quarter-hours and one half-hour. From the bully-off, the town team pressed their opponents for a few minutes, but the visitors were not long in changing the venue, and from that out the country players proved their superiority, Gisborne being kept hard on the defensive. No score resulted in the first two spells, but the third was not more than half through, when Miss A. Bradley, who had been playing a splendid game, made a brilliant hit from just on the edge of the circle, the ball Hying over the heads of her opponents, and falling under the crossbar, a goal resulting. This was followed up by a splendid rush by the country forwards, and Miss AV. Reynolds secured another goal, the game ending in favor of ,Te Arai bytwo goals to nil. Undoubtedly the best team won, the sure hitting of the backs and the superior combination of the forwards proving too much for the weaker town eleven. Several of the country girls were very fast, the smart manner in which they followed up bringing rounds of applause from the spectators. Misses AV. Reynolds, Bradley, and Johnson (2) played with considerable dash, and were always in their places when wanted. Misses M. Tucker and Reynolds, to whom the defence was entrusted, made no mistakes, and Miss Macfarlane made a safo goal-keeper. The town backs made a good stand against their stronger opponents, Misses Heaney, F. Sampson, and Butt being responsible for most of the work. Misses N. Sampson, F. Bloomfield, and F. McCredie were the pick of the forwards, and played with dash and vigor whenever they managed to obtain possession of the ball. Miss McCredie showet] great improvement since the previous match, her accurate hitting being often applauded.

Both teams had a strong following of “ barrackers,” who by vigorous cheering urged on the players. The game was played in the most friendly spirit, and the members of the To Arai Club were warmly complimented on their victory.
