AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
(Special to Timks.) Auckland, last night,
The death is recorded of Miss Matheson, youngest sister of Mrs Thomas Adams, of Gisborne ; on Saturday. The Mararoa arrived from Sydney on Sunday, and instead of continuing her usual trip South via Gisborne, she sailed for Sydney again the day following her arrival. The Talunc takes up the running South this trip.
Owing to the Hull being engaged at Gisborne at the time required by tho Newhury-Spada Company, their intention to treat the people of Gisborne to a series of performances will for a time be abandoned. Mr Newbury regrets being unablo to carry out his intentions. Ho will probably call at Gisborne after his Southern tour is finished.
It may bo interesting to my Gisborne readers to learn that George Towns, winner of the world's sculling championship, Wits burn at Newcastle, New South Wales, and is 32 years of age. He has been prominent in rowing circles for some years past, lie went to England in 1897. The following year lie rowed against Harry for the English championship. He was beaten. In 1899 he reversed the position, beating Harry. In 1900 he was pitted against James Wray, whom he beat somewhat easily. A few months ago ho was taken in hand by an Auckland boy, Mr Tom Sullivan, and as a result issued a challenge to row for the championship of the world, which was accepted by Jake Gaudaur, of Canada, the raco being arranged to take placo in Canadian waters. Jack Gaudaur is a Canadian, and has taken a very prominent part in rowing for some years past, having been engaged in most of the important events since ho wrested the championship from James Stansbury on the Thames live years since. Gaudaur is •It! years of age. His greatest performance probably was his race in 1880 against J teach, for the championship of the world, which was rowed oil on the Thames course, and in which he was beaten after a great struggle.
