POWERFUL FIRE ENGINE.
THOUSAND GALLONS A MINUTE,
(Special to Times.) Wellington, last night.
A trial is to be made to-morrow morn, ing, in tho presence of the Governor, of tho steam fire engine recently built in England to tho order of tbo Wellington Harbor Board, and which is to bo used in conjunction witli tho municipal tiro service when occasion demands. The engino, which is the biggest in this colony, and secopd only to ono or two in Australia as regards power, but of more modern construction, has a capacity for pumping a thousand gallons of water per minute, throwing a single jet to a height of two hundred and thirty feet, and has fivo delivery- valves. Sea water will be used whenever possible for fire-quenching purposes. Tho corporation has ordered a similar engine of six hundred gallons per minute pumping capacity. Tho engino ia by the same makers as constructed tho Gisborne engino.
